‘’Medical Youth’’ is an international, peer-reviewed, scientific medical journal based in Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. It was founded in 1949 by some of the best students of School of Medicine, which unequivocally makes it one of the journals with the longest tradition in Europe.
At its beginnings, it dealt almost exclusively with publishing the results of students’ research. According to professors of those days, the purpose of its existence is to offer the chance to learn more about scientific methods and science overall to students. In the process, students can contribute to their future profession, demonstrate their qualities, and those who are the most successful could maybe one day become professors themselves. What ‘’Medical Youth’’ meant for its contemporaries is most beautifully reflected in words of the founder of Institute of Oncology, Ksenofon Šahović, who made a statement that ‘’It is a duty of each and every student to read ‘’Medical Youth’’, to cooperate in its activities and publish in it, so that it can become the symbol of our pride and of our students’ aspirations’’.
Having in mind the political situation of our region back in the days of its founding, it is easy to understand the pivotal role of ‘’Medical Youth’’ in the development of national scientific knowledge, for there have been no major congresses in Southeastern Europe our doctors could attend, few books, and only handful of original scientific papers. It was in these desperate times when ‘’Medical Youth’’, led by the prodigal doctors of last century, stepped forward as a source of relevant, up-to-date medical achievements, while at the same time spurred on young doctors in training to part take in research and contribute to medicine themselves. It nourished the minds of our students, promoting healthy ambition and logic, as well as attitude never to take anything for granted.
Up to this day, ‘’Medical Youth’’ has never ceased its work. Today, in the year of 2018, we are working on our 69 th number, with each number having 4 volumes published quarterly by University of Belgrade, Faculty of Medicine. ‘’Medical Youth’’ is an open access journal, meaning the reader can access published peer-reviewed articles without any financial, legal or technical barriers**u zavisnosti od toga šta stavljamo kao link za same časopise ovde da se ubaci. While we are freely available to readers, there are still cost associated with the publication and production that are financed by**. We verify the authenticity of submitted research papers via iThenticate, making sure that any kind of plagiarism is immediately rejected. In addition to original scientific articles written by students, today ''Medical Youth’’ also publishes mini-reviews, written by postgraduate students, as well as review articles, written by Assistant Professors and Full Professors as the leading experts in their respective fields of interest. In that way, it continues to provide our students with necessary inspiration and desire to sharpen their knowledge and get to the forefront of research.
The editorial staff, comprising students of School of Medicine in Belgrade, under the supervision of editorial board, comprising professors of School of Medicine in Belgrade, works hard to perform up to the standards which were set by the past generations to ensure that ‘’Medical Youth’’ still remains our pride and joy. As for its infrastructure, members of the editorial staff are subdivided into 4 major branches:
Historically, peer-reviewing has been the cornerstone of our activity. It is important to maintain and properly execute all the principles of double-blind peer reviewing method, which ensures legit and objective selection of articles to be published, as well as enforce the battle against plagiarism. It does so by serving as a conduit of information between the author and reviewer without them ever communicating directly, primarily through the ‘’Aseestant’’ online platform governed by CEON organization. Furthermore, since the reviewer and the author cannot be from the same institution up to the level of University, it is duty of this branch to establish communication with professors from Schools of Medicine other than that in Belgrade.
In conclusion, we can freely state that ‘’Medical Youth’’ has stayed true to its objectives and principles. Our goal, inherited by our predecessors, is a never-ending one: to educate future doctors, reinforce their critical thinking, create experts unlike any others, guide them into the beauty of scientific research, not only to students in Serbia but worldwide.
